Rehearsals: The Practice and Influence of Sound and Movement

Rehearsals: The Practice and Influence of Sound and Movement presented works by acclaimed artists from the Walter O. Evans Collection in dialogue with selected contemporary works that explore themes of sound, movement, practice, and process. This cross-generational exhibition featured media ranging from painting and sculpture to video and photography, showcasing some of the diverse influences and expressions that have developed within global artistic practices in the last century. Additionally, Rehearsals dovetailed the unique and surprising correlations between audible and gestural expressions and visual languages in art. 

Selected artists from the Evans Collection included Romare Bearden, Richmond Barthé, Beauford Delaney, Aaron Douglas, Clementine Hunter, Jacob Lawrence, and Alma Thomas. 

Selected contemporary artists included John Bankston, Sanford Biggers, Candice Breitz, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Satch Hoyt, Jennie C. Jones, Rashaad Newsome, Dario Robleto, Jean Shin, Los Carpinteros, and Xaviera Simmons.
